Chan had nothing to do but sit in the darkness of the cave and let his mind wander. He was seriously beginning to consider swimming for the surface when the search party burst from the water and clambered onto the rocky shore.

“Finally!” shouted Chan, relieved to no longer be alone, yet dreading to tell them what had happened.

“Oh!” came Kenya's voice in the dark, “They're here!”

Kalin breathed and flames jumped to life at the top of his staff; they did not burn the wood, but they did light the cave.

Chan saw their happy faces fall as they looked around.

“It's only me,” said Chan quietly, “He took the girls.” The story of the Hunter using Nani to find out where they were and their quick flight from the cave rushed out of his mouth. “I was just barely holding on to the three of them with that stupid plant pulling me along, when he kicked me in the jaw. That knocked me for a bit and I lost them...” he finished weakly.

“You did all you could,” said Kalin, “and it was wise to wait here. Give the boy his sword.”

“Thanks,” muttered Chan as Aidan handed him his new sword.

“All right, everyone,” said Kalin. “There's no reason to believe the girls are hurt. This tunnel is useless though. We'll have to swim for the surface and hope the other Hunters are gone. Kindly hold your packs this way.” He motioned for them to turn around so that their bags were within his reach. “Can't have any of you drowning with the weight of all this stuff,” he smiled, and promptly filled their packs with Air.

The bags felt no lighter, but they certainly looked puffier as the group stepped out into the water again. Together they swam under the cave wall and began to rise to the surface.

“I don't see anyone,” whispered Aidan as the group gathered under the morning sun on the lake's northern shore. The Border Mountains loomed high above them and the forest appeared to be empty.

“Careful still,” whispered Kalin, “follow me.” The party moved slowly around the lake as Kalin searched for traces of the Hunter and the girls.

“Here,” he whispered, pointing to the ground. “Hoof prints. He must have gathered some of the horses.”

“Now what?” asked Aidan.

“We follow on foot. Stay close together, we'll have to go at a fairly quick pace. They're on horse, but they'll have to stop to take care of Nani, so that will give us a chance to catch up.”

“What do you think he's going to do?” asked Chan.

Kalin shook his head. “I doubt even Malcor knows, he's just trying to get away. Let's go.”

They started off, following the Hunter's trail up into the mountain wood, leaving Fairn Forest and Lake Hurya behind. The summer sun shone bright and hot, making it easy to forget that autumn was just weeks away.
